
Paul Cézanne’s “The Card Players” fetched a sum of $250 million in a private sale held in 2011. It was bought by the Royal Family of Qatar. Jackson Pollock’s painting titled “Number 5, 1948″ was sold for whopping $140 million and is the 2nd most expensive painting.
Pablo Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves and Bust was sold in May 2010 by Christie’s New York for a price of $106.5 million. It was never publicly exhibited since 1961. Another masterpiece of Picasso, which is also one of the most expensive paintings, is Garçon a la pipe - sold for $104.1 million in 2004 by Sotheby’s New York.
The Scream by Edvard Munch is the most costliest painting sold in an auction. In fact it was Garçon a la pipe which broke the record of Vincent van Gogh (held since 1990) and was the first painting ever to cross the milestone of $100 million.
